Aspire Auctions / December 9-15, 2011

Aspire Auctions is pleased to offer a work by one of the most important 20th century abstract artists, Alexander Calder. The piece is a gouache on paper entitled Adjunta. He has become one of the most enduring and consistently admired artists because his talent shines across a range of medium and over a large body of work. Calder is best known for his sculpture which began with bent wire sculptures, and eventually culminating in the area of sculpture he would popularize; the mobile. Throughout his long and prolific career Calder would return to his training in painting printmaking, as well. Painting was a logical and colorful form of expression for an artist who rarely encountered any type of raw material that he could not turn into a piece of art. His paintings, like Adjunta, seem to go hand in hand with his sculptures and mobiles, as the colors and shapes seen in both types of work, reference each other and are equally vibrant and modern. The estimate for this piece is $30,000 - $50,000. The auction catalogue may be viewed at www.aspireauctions.com. The December online auction opens Friday December 9th and lots close the following week, December 15th. It's a timed auction, so you can bid anytime from anywhere, up until the timer runs out for the lot. Lots close in 1 minute intervals, over a two day period. There are over 800 lots, ranging from fine paintings, sculpture, Asian, sterling, fine watches & jewelry, pottery & glass, books, antique weapons, furniture and carpets.
