Harry Bertoia, The Sonambients

Sound was brought to sculpture in the 1960’s by Harry Bertoia. A diverse selection of Harry Bertoia’s sound sculptures referred to as Sonambients, will be on view at Graham in New York. Featured will be one of his finest table top Sonambients that has five rows, totaling 343 elegant Beryllium rods of perfect height that play a hauntingly mellow sound. There is an exceptional six-foot floor standing Sonambient that sports a great aged patina and an endearing mid-size cattail topped Sonambient. One of the smaller tower Sonambients is a maquette with history as it was a presentation piece to garner the Standard Oil public commission, which was one of Bertoia’s greatest monumental public creations. Harry Bertoia is fast capturing the attention of collectors and museums and is becoming a must for any collection that features what was best and most innovative of the late 20th century. This attention is well deserved and to be able to experience these Sonambients in an intimate setting with varying examples is a memorable experience.
