Robert Indiana's Hartley Elegies
This exhibition includes ten monumental screenprints by Robert Indiana exploring the relationship between Marsden Hartley and Karl von Freyburg, as referenced in Hartley’s “German Officer” paintings of 1914-15. The American artist Marsden Hartley lived in Berlin just before the outbreak of World War I and developed strong feelings for the German officer who died in the early days of the war. Printed in the early 1990s, the ten prints are from the collection of The Tobin Theatre Arts Fund. This is the first time in twenty years that the entire suite is on view at the McNay. This exhibition is organized by the McNay Art Museum.
