As a follow-up to the highly successful Off the Wall: The Human Form in Sculpture, the Norton Museum of Art has organized Beyond the Figure: Abstract Sculpture in the Norton Museum Collection. As the title suggests, the exhibition–drawn from the Norton’s American, European and Contemporary collections–will present groupings of abstract sculpture. The approximately 25 sculptures are organized around such themes as “Lines,” “Assemblages” and “Vessels.” Examples include: Sol Lewitt’s modular white cube sculpture and a Howard Ben Tré cast glass and bronze pseudo-architectural sculpture are featured in “Lines.” “Assemblages” includes typical constructed works by Louise Nevelson and Nancy Graves. And finally, “Vessels” is anchored by a group of 7 Macchia by Dale Chihuly and Ursula Von Rydingsvard’s gigantic carved-cedar bowl.
