Heinrich Kühn
From large-scale landscapes to intimate, open-air pictures, this retrospective portrays the work of photographer Heinrich Kühn as careful studies in light reflected through transparent materials. Heinrich Kühn (1866—1944) was an internationally recognized Austrian photographer and a celebrated leader of Pictorialism, a technique characterized by subtle, painterly tonalities and the play of light across genteel subjects. Born in Germany, Kühn trained in science and medicine and by age 20 was devoting himself to photography. He became particularly skilled in photographic processes that were applied to the paper by hand, allowing him greater latitude to manipulate aspects of the picture.
