Languid Moments: Charleston, New Orleans, and Havana
On Friday, May 7, 2010 (5:30-8PM), RICHARD SEXTON will open “LANGUID MOMENTS,” an exhibition of color photography. This exhibit, though it spans almost twenty years of photography, consists predominantly of very recent work, most of it from Cuba. In 1991, when Sexton moved to Louisiana, he began photographing the historic architecture of the region, which was in various stages of decline, from frayed elegance to complete ruin. In recent years he’s expanded the scope of this work beyond Louisiana to locales that have a cultural or historical connection to Louisiana. This has included Latin America, as well as the low country of South Carolina and Georgia. His subjects include both architecture and the natural landscape, which are chosen for their evocation of the passage of time. Regardless of the subjects that Sexton photographs, his images always have a common denominator. They are languid. On Thursday, May 6, 2010 there will be a lecture by RICHARD SEXTON at the American College of the Building Arts at the Old Jail at 21 Magazine Street, historic downtown Charleston. The preservation of significant architecture is expected to be the focus.
