American Art Sales Show Vital Signs

The May 20 American art sales at Sotheby's and Christie's had a pulse, but were far from robust. One stand-out was Milton Avery's "Sketching by the Sea," which doubled its high estimate at Christie's, raking in a strong $2,210,500. The work hadn't been on the market for 60 years. In addition, fine examples of Bierstadt, Remington, Bellows, Hassam, Potthast (shown here) and Cole garnered paddle-battles with high-figure price results.
