Colin Campbell Cooper's California scene snags record

A rediscovered Colin Campbell Cooper was offered by Connecticut auctioneer Shannon's on Oct. 29 in a $3.6 million sale. Consigned from a private Midwest collection where it had remained in the same family since the 1930s, the painting caused quite a stir. Dated 1927, the Santa Barbara, Calif., scene titled "The Terrace, Samarkand," estimated at $200/300,000, went to a private collector for $456,000 after a fierce bidding battle. The painting established a record price paid at auction for a California painting by the artist.
