A groundbreaking ceremony took place yesterday for the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. Billionaire Eli Broad ponied up $28 million for the new building, designed by London-based architect Zaha Hadid, as a centerpiece for contemporary art at his alma mater. Of his gift, $7million is dedicated to acquisitions and operations.
So far, $33 million in private funds have been raised overall. The 46,000–square-foot building will be made of concrete, glass, and steel.
Broad also plans to build an eponymous museum of contemporary art in Los Angeles.
