The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in Philadelphia recently acquired three works for its American art collection, including Mark Bradford's "Untitled (Dementia)," 2009; Philip Evergood's "Mine Disaster", 1933/37; and Lilly Martin Spencer's "Mother and Child by the Hearth," 1867.
Bradford (b. 1961), who is a MacArthur Fellowship Genius Grant recipient, is represented with a twelve panel work using posters advertising services to Alzheimers sufferers.
"Mine Disaster" is one of Philip Evergood's (1901-1973) most important works and a major example of American social realism.
Spencer's (1822-1902) "Mother and Child by the Hearth" of 1867 shows a mother in the pose of a High Renaissance Madonna and Child, surrounded by the accoutrements of the American middle class dream.
Spencer exhibited at PAFA in 1861 and 1862, but this is her first work to enter PAFA's collection.
