Maynard Dixon at Clars Auction

Bolstered by four big estates, Clars' May 15-16 auction includes some important 17th and 18th century furnishings and a fine selection of art from Old Masters to contemporary artists. Asian art and jewelry round out the Oakland, Calif. firm's sale.

Top-notch Western artists represented include Percy Gray, Will Sparks, and Karl Schmidt as well as Maynard Dixon whose “Moonrise over the Mojave” is estimated at $150,000 to $250,000.

Among the furniture offerings is a J & JW Meeks “Hawkins” pattern armchair, studio furniture from George Nakashima and Wharton Esherick as well as a circa-1650 Charles II small Oyster-style walnut inlaid chest (estimate: $10,000 to $15,000).

A framed silver gelatin photograph by Ansel Adams titled “Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite,” estimated at $40,000 to $60,000, is part of the photography lots featuring Jock Sturges, Edward Steichen, Weegee and other fine photographers.
