The major American art auctions and gallery events are underway in New York City this week. On May 20, Christie's will offer a $15 million collection of works by Maxfield Parrish, including his iconic "Daybreak." According to arts writer Lindsay Pollack, the Parrish cache comes from the Greenwich, Connecticut, home of actor Mel Gibson, and his wife Robyn, who filed for divorce last year.
Also, on the docket is the inventory of a liquidated Manhattan gallery. In a Christie's video, the consignor, retiring gallerist Bernard Goldberg, waxes on about his favorites in the auction, including Elie Nadelman's marble "Duck" which he describes as "quiet, refined." And while his Thomas Hart Benton titled "Martha's Vineyard" is small (7 3/4 x 6 inches), Goldberg enthuses that "bigger isn't necessarily better" with Benton.
