Lot 35: Gilbert Stuart, Portrait of General Rainsford

Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828), famous for his presidential portraits of George Washington, also depicted the American leader’s war enemy. General Charles Rainsford, a British officer responsible for recruiting Hessian soldiers to fight the colonists during the Revolutionary War, was painted in England by Stuart between 1776-1777, while he was studying under Benjamin West (1738-1820).

On June 6, Dedham, Mass.-based auctioneer Grogan & Company is offering the 30 x 24 inch oil portrait with an estimate of $25,000-35,000.

Lot 30: The Lincoln Children by Alvan Fisher at Grogan & Company's June 6 Auction.

The sale consists of fine art, 18th and 19th century furniture and decorative works of art, silver, jewelry and oriental rugs and carpets.

A few highlights include a Portrait of the Lincoln Children of Wareham, Massachusetts, by Alvan Fisher, circa 1834, estimated at $20,000-30,000; a selection of fine portrait miniatures; and a circa-1854 first octavo edition of James John Audubon’s The Quadrupeds of North America with 155 color plates.

Among the decorative art selections are many examples of Staffordshire Historical Blue Ware, including the Landing of General Lafayette, Castle Gardens, New York, 1824.
