Strong women figure largely in two 19th-century paintings that actress Demi Moore is offering at Sotheby's in New York this fall.
A poignant scene of a mother and children by Belgain artist Alfred Stevens along with William Bouguereau's touching rendition of a sister carrying her little brother are scheduled for the Nov. 4 sale.
Stevens's 1883 oil painting Mère et Ses Enfants (est. $150,000 - 200,000) is a later and less grim version of a commission from the Belgian government. The original painting The Widow and her Children (1883, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels) was a tribute to brave sailors lost at sea and the families they left behind.
The Bouguereau depicts a slim young girl tenderly gazing at her toddler brother as she hoists him high on her shoulder (est. 1,000,000 - 1,500,000).
