The 2010 USArtists appeared right at home at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts's beautiful Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building in the center of Philadelphia from Sept 30 to Oct. 3.
While rain storms kept some collectors away, about 3,000 show visitors gave an enthusiastic response to the venue change and the dealers' offerings of American art which included both historic works and new art. About 15% of works shown were created by living artists.
The opening gala resulted in some swift sales, many to knowledgeable local collectors, including a $225,000 Edward Redfield at the booth of Gratz Gallery, Doylestown, Penn.
New York's Hirschl & Adler Modern sold a 2009 oil on canvas by Randall Exon (b. 1956) titled "Skaters on the Brandywine." While Debra Force Fine Art, New York City, sold Robert Vickrey's (b 1926), "Chalk Wall," 1953, on opening night, among other works.
Some dealers focused on a single artist in their booth displays. The Cooley Gallery, Old Lyme, Conn., featured the atmospheric landscapes of Lockwood de Forest. Blue Heron Fine Art, Cohasset, Mass., displayed four paintings by Edith Branson (1891–1976), a midcentury Modernist.
