Chateau Lafite leads international wine market

Three bottles of Chateau Lafite’s 1869 vintage each sold for a world record price of HK$1.8 million ($230,000) at a sold-out Sotheby's wine sale in Hong Kong on Thursday, reports Businessweek.
The sale total for 284 lots was HK$65.5 million with fees, against a high estimate of HK$19.5 million at hammer prices.
Asian buyers battled for the top ten lots, including a 12-bottle case of the Lafite 1982 vintage that went for a steep HK$1 million (US$131,859).
On Nov. 2, Boston-based Skinner's is offering First Growth 1982 Lafite Rothschild in various quantities including a full case (estimated at $30,000-$45,000) in its Fine Wines auction. The 700-lot sale offers a variety of makers and vintages at many price points.
Among the other highlights in the Skinner sale is a stunning 50 case ‘superlot’ of all five First Growth Bordeaux spanning the years 1995-2004 which includes provenance paperwork and is estimated at $200,000-$300,000.
Stephen Williams of The Antique Wine Company said in a statement that he has for private sale a collection of 19th-century Chateau Lafite Rothschild, covering the vintages 1873, 1881, 1882, 1888, 1890 and an Imperial of 1899, itself valued at US$289,800 (HKD 4,419,620), altogether priced at about US$933,800.
