A contentious lawsuit against Brandeis University has been settled with an agreement that will keep its Rose Art Museum's modern art collection intact.
Four Rose Art Museum supporters - Meryl Rose, Jonathan Lee, Lois Foster and Gerald Fineberg - have agreed to drop the lawsuit now that the school has said it will not disperse of the art as a fundraiser.
In 2009, the Waltham, Mass.-based school caused an uproar when Brandeis President Jehuda Reinharz said the renowned collection of works by the likes of Willem de Kooning, Jasper Johns, and Helen Frankenthaler would be sold to cover expenses.
Amid the fury, Reinharz stepped down and was replaced by Fred Lawrence who has steered toward keeping the collection at the Rose Art Museum.
"Obviously, the new president really gets this," Meryl Rose said in the Boston Globe. "He absolutely gets the importance of this collection and the important place the Rose has in the art world."
