Miró is one of the most undervalued of the 20th century masters,” Helly Nahmad stated at the Artelligence conference held last week in New York. “We have yet to see a $100 million Miró like we have with Picasso or Alberto Giacometti.”

Nahmad was joined by fellow dealers Nick MacLean, Guy Bennett and Nick Acquavella in a panel discussion titled "Inside the Modern Art Market" where the general consensus was that blue-chip modern art was still a safe bet for collectors.

A number of factors may weigh in Miró's favor as a new leader in the market. For one, the Tate Modern's recent retrospective on the artist, the first in 50 years, will travel to the U.S. Also, his work is rare to market, but now collectors are recognizing that the artist's late period includes some of his best output.

Finally, Acquavella noted that Miró may strike the aesthetic sensibilites of contemporary art collectors. “His use of collage can appeal to someone who likes Robert Rauschenberg or Jasper Johns,” he said.
