How an Art Dealer Inspired an Icon of Modern Art

It's rare that an artist asks his art dealer to direct his creative output.
Such was the case in 1985, when Pop artist Andy Warhol left the decision of what to create for his next exhibition in the hands of his dealer.
Anthony d’Offay, the UK art dealer whose own art collection, valued in 2008 at around £125m, was sold to the nation for £26.5m, had an idea for Warhol.
Self-portraits with a "wow" factor, resulting in a red image of the artist set against a foreboding black background which became an icon of modern art.
Andy Warhol: Late Self-Portraits is on view April 11 to Dec. 1, 2012, at the Graves Gallery, Museums Sheffield, in the UK.
