Babe Ruth Jersey Hits $4.4 Million at Auction

A 1920s road jersey—the earliest existing New York Yankees jersey known to have belonged to the legendary slugger Babe Ruth—soared to $4.4 million to become the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold at auction.
Consigned by a private collector, the shirt brought $4,415,658 from an anonymous bidder, according to SCP Auctions of California.
The previous record price for sports memorabilia was $4,338,500, set in 2010 for the original rules of basketball written by the sport’s inventor Dr. James Naismith.
The jersey was from Ruth's first season with the New York Yankees after he was bought from the Boston Red Sox.
