Controversial Plans to Sell Corcoran Gallery of Art Building Scrapped

Home to major works by the likes of Corot, Degas, Sargent, and Homer, the Corcoran Gallery of Art will remain in its historic Beaux-Arts building in Washington D.C. after spending months under the threat of sale.
The museum's board of trustees has said that publicity from the possible sale of the museum's 1897 building, with its estimated $130 million in needed repairs, has generated leads to solutions.
A move to a less expensive site in the suburbs was considered for the city's oldest private art gallery, but many local and art community members were vocal opponents.
Deficits of $7 million-plus have been posted for two consecutive years with a bright spot being the museum's related Corcoran College of Art and Design with its rising enrollment and tuition fees.
