A 1913 graduate of a small town high school in Indiana left his alma mater with a tremendous legacy to honor his favorite teacher. From 1938 until his death in 1965, industrialist G. David Thompson showered works from his multimillion dollar art collection to Peru High School as a tribute to an inspiring teacher, John Whittenberger.
Now owned entirely by Peru High School in Peru, Indiana, the John Whittenberger collection of G. David Thompson at Peru High School is now partly revealed in a museum exhibition.
On view through Feb. 24, 2013, at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art is a sampling of prime examples by American and European artists in the collection, ranging from a portrait of Pablo Picasso by Salvador Dali to an idyllic seascape by William Merrit Chase.
