A staff member at a Goodwill store in Manassas, Virginia, had a good eye as she sorted through donations. Maria Rivera spotted an attractive painting that she set aside and it turned out to be by the late 19th-century Italian painter Giovanni Battista Torriglia (1858-1937).
Valued at about $12,000, the Torriglia depicts an older woman sipping from a tea cup. The artist is known for his domestic scenes.
The Goodwill will auction the artwork online to raise funds for its core mission of helping those in need.
Store employees in Manassas expect that they will get quite a few calls from people who might claim they dropped the artwork off accidentally. However, the painting is now at the disposal of the Goodwill to sell.
