Edward Hopper Draws More Crowds than Picasso in Paris

Organizers of a major Edward Hopper retrospective at the Grand Palais in Paris say that the exhibition brought in more visitors than a prime Picasso collection.
In less than four months, 784,269 visitors took in the American realist's works, just slightly outnumbering the crowds for "Picasso and the Masters" at the museum in 2008-9.
Museum officials said the attendance numbers were unexpected, but spoke to the appeal of Hopper's paintings.
Edward Hopper's (1882-1967) work has a sort of picture-book obviousness. A romantic, realist, symbolist and even formalist, Hopper has been assigned under every possible stylistic banner. The exhibition at the Grand Palais touched on this complexity, exploring the richness of Hopper’s oeuvre.
The exhibit closed on Feb. 4. At the last minunte, some 49,000 people rushed to view it, including US Vice President Joe Biden's wife, Jill.
