A signature graffiti-style painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat brought $29 million at Christie's in London on Tuesday. The untitled 1982 oilstick-on-panel sold to an anonymous telephone bidder who paid near the high estimate of $30 million.
The Basquiat led the first sale in London's postwar and contemporary art auction series this week. The work soared far above its 2002 sale price of $1.6 million when it sold at Phillips de Pury & Luxembourg.
The record price of $48.8 million for a work by Basquiat was achieved in May 2013 at Christie's for his seven-foot-tall "Dustheads," also done in 1982.
