On Wednesday, July 10, 2013, President Obama will present Ellsworth Kelly, who turned 90 earlier this year, with a National Medal of Arts. Established in 1984, the National Medal of Arts is the highest award given to artists by the United States Government.
Previous artist winners of the award include Georgia O’Keeffe, Willem de Kooning and Jasper Johns.
Among the other recipients for 2012 at next week's ceremony will be soprano Renée Fleming and film producer George Lucas.
The National Endowment for the Arts was established by the Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the Federal Government. To date, the NEA has awarded more than $4 billion to support artistic excellence, creativity, and innovation for the benefit of individuals and communities.
