Johannes Vermeer, The Milkmaid, ca. 1660. Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum.

In an unlikely pairing, Dutch master Vermeer is the subject of a new documentary directed by Teller, the shorter half of the magic duo Penn & Teller.

Teller tells a tale of a Texas inventor named Tim Jenison who is on a quest to discover how Johannes Vermeer created such his realistic looking masterpieces in the 17th century, more than 150 years before photography was invented.

"Tim's Vermeer" follows Jenison on a journey to Holland where he follows the artist's footsteps. He also interviews experts and others such as artist David Hockney for ideas about Vermeer's method.

Sony Pictures Classics announced last week that has acquired worldwide rights to distribute "Tim's Vermeer." It will be released in 2014.
