On Tuesday, Amazon Arts was launched by the massive e-retailer, with works by the likes of Norman Rockwell, Andy Warhol and Claude Monet up for sale, along with low-end prints for just $25.
Shoppers who are on Amazon.com to purchase such items as books and home supplies now can browse 40,000 artworks from more than 150 galleries and dealers, including Rockwell's “Willie Gillis: Package from Home” priced at $4.85 million.
Other highlights include a Warhol-signed screenprint of “Sachiko” for $45,000, a small portrait by Monet for $1.45 million and a mixed media piece encrusted with gems by Damien Hirst for $500,000.
The high-end of the art market has yet to sell briskly online. One exception was a 1916 watercolor by Egon Schiele which brought a top price this June in an online-only auction. Schiele's “Reclining Woman” sold for EUR 1.8 million ($2,356,200) with fees, from German-based Auctionata.
