"Maurice Prendergast: By the Sea" a Must-See Summer Exhibition
- August 07, 2013 15:14
Called "the loveliest, most languid art show of this New England summer" by the Boston Globe, "Maurice Prendergast: By the Sea" at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art offers a comprehensive look at the resplendent seaside scenes of this singular American artist.
The show, which runs through October 13, 2013, is the first to present works in the shore theme that post-impressionist Prendergast (1858-1924) focused on for much of his career. Coves, beaches, and seaside delights from Boston Harbor to Nahant, points in Maine and beyond, come alive with a sophisticated and sensitive handling of oil and watercolor.
An exhibition catalog with text written by Trevor Fairbrother is available. Nancy Mowll Mathews, former Eugénie Prendergast Senior Curator of 19th and 20th Century Art at Williams College Museum of Art, was co-curator of the exhibition.
