One of the more provocative works by Pop artist Andy Warhol soared to an artist auction record price of $105.4 million at Sotheby's contemporary art auction on Wednesday.
“Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster),” one of four double-paneled car crash paintings that Warhol created in 1963, was the last privately-held work in its size (8 by 13 feet).
The buyer was not identified. The work has a history of ownership in the prominent collections of Gunter Sachs, Charles Saatchi and Thomas Ammann.
At least five bidders were active at the painting's high estimate of $80 million. International super-rich buyers were out and active all week at the New York auctions.
Sotheby's sale brought a total $380.6 million, near its high $394 million estimate, with 60 works selling and 7 passed.
Artworks sold by Steven A. Cohen of SAC Capital, the company that pleaded guilty on Friday to insider trading charges, brought nearly $87 million. One highlight was a Brice Marden that fetched $10.9 million, a record price for the American abstract artist.
The night before at Christie's, a Lucien Freud triptych titled “Three Studies of Lucian Freud” sold for $142.4 million, a record price for any artwork.
