Two 1930s paintings by eminent American artist Edward Hopper have been chosen to adorn the Oval Office. The White House released a photo of President Obama taking a moment to view the paintings, arms folded and with his back to the camera.
Both works are on loan from the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and date from the Great Depression era (1930-33). Each is an oil on canvas created when Hopper and his wife, Jo, summered on Cape Cod.
"Cobb's Barns, South Truro" and "Burly Cobb's House, South Truro" represent Hopper's masterful use of light and evoke a quiet solitude with the absence of figures.
