Obama's Budget: Heavy on DC Museums, Light on Arts Grants

Washington, D.C. museums will continue with strong funding from the federal government in a budget proposed by President Obama. The Smithsonian and the National Gallery of Art will get Obama's entire proposed arts increase for museums. His arts and culture spending proposals total $1.53 billion for the 2014-15 year, a 3.5% increase over the previous year.
Annual funding for the grant making agencies National Endowment of the Arts and National Endowment of the Humanities will remain unchanged at $146 million each. The Institute of Museum and Library Service got hit with a cut of $412,000 from its budget. Obama had previously pushed for a 12% increase for the three agencies, but Congress limited the increase to 5.8%.
The Smithsonian made out the best with its budget upped to $850.9 million from $805 million, a 5.7% increase. The National Gallery of Art would get a 5.3% increase to $140 million.
Another big winner in the proposed budget is the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, which is expected to open in 2015. Obama allocated $74.9 million to the new museum.
If Obama's proposed budget is passed as is, federal funding will have increased by about $20 million from its 2011-12 level, resulting in a 1.3% increase over three years that does not keep up with inflation rates.
