In Rotterdam, a new building shaped like an enormous salad bowl, complete with leafy greens on top, will house the city's precious art collection. Works of art not normally on view will be stored in the building, as opposed to tucked away in a far-off warehouse, and it will be open to the public to explore.
The exterior of this innovative structure, a "depot" dreamed up by architects MVRDV, will be mirrored, reflecting the cityscape.
Inside will be the art collection of Rotterdam in collaboration with the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Visitors can walk around to view art, see how it is stored, handled and restored. On top of the depot will sit a leafy sculpture garden and cafe for visitors.
Spaces within will also include rented rooms for private collections, where visitors can get a peek at privately-owned artworks,
