Philippe Vergne says he will focus on careful planning as he takes the reins of LA's Museum of Contemporary Art Museum (MOCA).

Fresh from New York's Dia Art Foundation, Vergne is just two weeks into his role as the new director of MOCA. He has spent much time talking with staff and board members.

"The most important priority is to look at the programming and reimagine the program" of exhibitions and events, he told the Los Angeles Times.

Vergne follows his controversial predecessor, Jeffrey Deitch, the New York gallerist, and a tumultous few years for the museum with a great loss of staff, board members, and a plummeting endowment.

A "great chief curator" will be sought right away, says Vergne. The board has already renewed itself with the return of artists John Baldessari, Barbara Kruger and Catherine Opie as members. The trio had resigned the board, along with artist Ed Ruscha, during the staff upheavals and financial floundering of 2012.
