Rothko Expert Ensnared by Knoedler Gallery Art Scandal

A lawsuit filed Tuesday in US District Court in Manhattan names a respected art historian and curator in the stupendous art scam centered around fakes sold by Knoedler & Company gallery in New York.
Las Vegas casino mogul Frank J. Fertitta III filed the suit over the $7.2 million he paid for a painting sold as a Mark Rothko. It turned out to be one of dozens of fakes created by a Chinese immigrant in a Queens garage and passed through Long Island dealer Glafira Rosales to Knoedler clients, and others.
Rothko expert Oliver Wick, currently a curator at Kunsthaus Zurich, is named in the suit for "willful blindness or reckless disregard of the truth" because he gave the painting the green light. Wick received a $300,000 consulting fee from Knoedler for his part in the Rothko sale, and, for Knoedler, he presented the painting as genuine to New York dealer Eykyn Maclean which sold it to Fertitta.
Eykyn Maclean gallery is a co-plaintiff in the suit, one of several claims against Knoedler since the gallery closed in 2011.
