Zhang Xiaogang's Painting of Little Red Guard Brings Record $12.1 Million

Auction records were smashed for Chinese contemporary artist Zhang Xiaogang and seven other Asian artists at Sotheby’s HK$670 million ($86 million) Hong Kong evening sale over the weekend.
“Bloodline: Big Family No.3,” from Zhang's iconic series of three family members, brought HK$94.2 million ($12.1 million) on April 5. The 1995 oil is the only work from Zhang's Bloodline series to feature a Little Red Guard wearing a Mao badge, according to Sotheby's. The artist's previous auction record was HK$79 million.
‘‘Our Soldiers Led Under Prince Diponegoro,” by Indonesian artist S. Sudjojono (1914-1986) became the new world record auction price holder for a Southeast Asian artist when it sold for HK$58.4 million.
Nine out of ten top lots went to Asian buyers. Records were also set for Japanese contemporary artist Yoshitomo Nara (HK$15.7 million), Indonesians Sudjana Kerton (HK$13.2 million) and Ay Tjoe Christine (HK$4.6 million), and Vietnamese modern painter Le Pho (HK$3 million).
