San Francisco and Chicago are gunning for the massive American art and movie memorabilia collection of "Star Wars" creator George Lucas.

The cities are scrambling to come up with ideas for sites to house the filmmaker's art in a proposed $700 million museum, representing a $1-billion gift with the collections. Now, after Lucas's plan for San Francisco's Presidio was shot down, former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown has come up a new idea that is striking chords.

Brown has proposed Piers 30-32 on San Francisco's waterfront. The Golden State Warriors team have abandoned development plans for the bay-slung piers in favor of a Mission Bay location. Recently, another museum, the Exploratorium, has successfully relocated to a nearby pier.

On Friday, San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee made a statement that his staff had until the end of May to find a suitable location for the future Lucas Cultural Arts Museum. Chicago's mayor Rahm Emanuel gave the same orders to his city's civic leaders in April.
