Getty's 'Victorious Youth' Once Again in Custody Battle

One of the prized attractions on view at the Getty Villa in Malibu, Calif., is the subject of a legal dispute for a third time.
In Rome this week, the Court of Cassation is expected to deliberate the case on ownership of the 'Victorious Youth.' The bronze statue was purchased in 1977 by the Getty Trust after Italian fisherman had found it more than 2,000 years after it presumably sank off Italy's Adriatic coast in international waters.
Italy claims it state property and the Getty, which won similar cases on ownerhip in 1970 and 2007, finds itself dealing with the Italian courts in a third round. The museum claims that statute is owned cleanly since it was found in international waters and was never known to be owned by Greek or Roman forebears. Whether Getty's board decides to go with any court ruling to the contrary will remain to be seen.
