George Lucas has been offered 2.3 acres of San Francisco's prime waterfront real estate by the city's mayor in an attempt to lure the "Star Wars" filmmaker to build his arts and culture museum there, according to Mayor Ed Lee's office.

Last Thursday the mayor sent Lucas the proposal after Chicago proposed a 17-acre site that made the Windy City a leading contender for the future museum.

"This is the most iconic site we could offer up,” said Christine Falvey, a spokeswoman for Mayor Ed Lee’s office. “It's right on our waterfront and right by our Bay Bridge and AT&T park."

Lucas's collection of 19th, 20th and 21st century art, including iconic works by such American artists as Norman Rockwell and Maxfield Parrish, along with digital animation and memorabilia would be housed inthe museum.

The waterfront site offer follows Lucas's rejected proposal to build the museum in San Francisco's Presidio, a scenic parcel of land protected from development under a land trust. Chicago chased the museum with its own substantial offer in May.

A decision on the museum site should be made during the summer, according to Lucas's team.
