A beach scene by German impressionist Max Liebermann found in Gurlitt's collections.

The Swiss museum that German collector Cornelius Gurlitt designated as his sole heir will vet his collection of artworks prior to accepting the gift. Some of the artworks bear dubious provenances, and were acquired by Gurlitt's father during the Nazi era.

Kunstmuseum Bern said in a statement Tuesday that they have not reviewed the art or seen an inventory of the more than 1,000 artworks left by Gurlitt when he died last month. German authorities seized the art from Gurlitt's Munich apartmen two years ago, revealing a hidden collection of works by the likes of Matisse, Chagall and Picasso.

The museum says it has six months to decide whether or not to accept the Gurlitt gift. The German court handling the case has not weighed in on the issue.
