The Frick Collection is planning a major expansion and renovation of its Gilded Age-era mansion on New York's Upper East Side. The museum wants to add a six-story wing on East 70th Street with construction to begin in 2017 and end in early 2020.
Stylistic elements and the height of the 1913-1914 mansion and 1935 expansions will be reflected in the new design, says the Frick. More gallery space, a 220-seat auditorium and a rooftop garden will be added.
Several of the mansion's second floor rooms will be open to the public for the first time, including former bedrooms, a study and breakfast room. The rooms will showcase more objects from the permanent collection.
Neighbors of the museum have yet to be shown plans, and city's landmark officials will need to approve the expansion.
