Some 58 iconic American artworks are splashed across 50,000 outdoor spaces, from billboards to buses, across the U.S. this month. The program 'Art Everywhere U.S.' launched in Times Square  on Monday, featuring the voted-on artworks.

The campaign copies one done last year in the U.K. using donated spaces. The U.S. version is sponsored by the Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA) in conjunction with the Art Institute of Chicago, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Whitney Museum in New York. The participating museums hope to lure more visitors through the effort.

Online voters chose Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks" as their favorite work. Others chosen for the campaign are Gilbert Stuart's portrait of George Washington from 1793; Fitz Henry Lane's 1850s "Boston Harbor;" Grant Wood's Iowa farm couple in "American Gothic" (1930); and Roy Lichtenstein's "Look Mickey" (1961).

The OAAA is promoting new technology with the campaign. Viewers can scan the images with their smartphones to find out more about the artwork. See a map of locations here.
