Landscape Masters Turner and Constable Returned to Rivalry in Concurrent Exhibitions

The most spectacular artistic rivalry in British history will be revived in September when blockbuster exhibitions by two of the nation's most renowned painters pitch them into direct competition, just as they were in their lifetimes two centuries ago, reports the Guardian.

At the Tate Britain, effervescent works of sky, sea and landscape by Joseph Mallord William Turner will go on view starting Sept. 10. The EY Exhibition: Late Turner – Painting Set Free explores the artist's late masterworks, created from 1835 to 1851.  John Constable's work gets the spotlight at the V&A where his fresh and detailed observations are on view alongside old masters of classical landscapes, from Sept. 20.

Both credited with spurring on impressionism, these two Romantic era artists are once again presented in rivalry at dual exhibitions that raise the long debated question: Who is the greatest of British painter of them all?
