Georges Seurat's "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" (1884-1886) is a big draw to the Art Institute of Chicago.
Art Institute of Chicago
User reviews on TripAdvisor have ranked the Art Institute of Chicago as first in a list of the world's best museum destinations.

One reviewer wrote of the Art Institute, "I've been visiting Chicago for 40 years, and on every visit, I go here. It never gets old. Paintings from every era, works from every great artist." Collection highlights include Georges Seurat's "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" and Grant Wood's "American Gothic."

Released on Tuesday, TripAdvisor's museum ranking is based on an algorithm that factors in the quality and quantity of reviews over a 12-month period. Trailing the Art Institute in the world's best category were the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City and the State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Surprisingly, the most-visited museum in the world, the Louvre, was ranked lower on the list at number 19 by TripAdvisor.

A ranking of the best museums in the U.S. begins with the Art Institute of Chicago, followed by The Getty and the Met. Newer museums made the cut, too, including Crystal Bridges of American Art in Bentonville, Ark. and Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle which opened in 2012.
