Artist Bosco Sodi Creates an Art Utopia with Architect Tadao Ando

Brooklyn-based
artist Bosco Sodi's new arts foundation in Oaxaca, Mexico is featured
in WSJ. Magazine's October issue. Casa Wabi, the expansive, minimalist property, designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, is meant to be "a
refuge for artists and the local community." The complex, which opens at
the end of this month, boasts an 8,000 square foot art gallery, numerous studios
for visiting artists, a botanical garden and much more. Sodi hopes to attract
artists around the world who will interact with local students from
kindergarten through university.
“The
children in these communities have no contact with art," says Sodi. "The idea is to bring
them to see the studios, the nursery, the gardens and to open their
understanding of life...I want them to see a Daniel Buren sculpture and think,
‘Why is this art?’ And then they might think, ‘I can do this.’”
Said Patricia Martin, curator for the foundation, “The
program will bring together two worlds that don’t usually coexist:
renowned artists and members of developing communities...The hope is that
it will become a relevant community center where the learning experience
goes both ways. This will be a social project carried out through art.”
