Winter weather could drive some folks to Palm Springs this February for the 10th annual Modernism Week. On tap are tours of the Annenberg's art-filled Sunnylands estate, visits to an iconic midcentury modern showhouse, and shopping the Modernism Show along with the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair.
The 15th Annual Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale at the Palm Springs Convention Center features eighty-five premier national and international dealers presenting furniture, decorative and fine arts reflecting all design movements of the 20th century, with a special emphasis on midcentury modern.
The show opens on Friday, February 13 with a gala opening night party benefitting Modernism Week from 6-9 p.m. The Show continues Saturday (10 a.m. – 6 p.m.), Sunday (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.), and Monday (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.).
New York's Throckmorton Fine Art, Palm Springs' Heather James Fine Art, and Beverly Hills' Timothy Yarger Fine Art are a few of the exhibitors specializing in postwar and contemporary art at the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair, held Feb. 12-15 with an opening night party on Feb. 12. This year's edition celebrates William Wegman as "Photographer of the Year."
Among the highlights of the 10th edition of Modernism Week in Palm Springs, from Feb. 12 to 22, 2015. is the Christopher Kennedy Compound. This showhouse celebrates the Palm Springs legacy of midcentury modern architecture and jet set American style.
Another must-see is the Annenberg residence, Sunnylands, designed by A. Quincy Jones in 1966 and restored from 2010 to 2012. A tour allows visitors to examine the interior design by William Haines and Ted Graber, the Sunnylands art collection, and explore the 200-acre estate with its nine-hole golf course.
Publishing magnate Walter Annenberg and his wife Leonore left all but their billion-dollar Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting collection (now in the Met) at Sunnylands so visitors can enjoy the full-range of artworks originally installed at the historic house. According to the home's website, among the fine art on view are works by Yaacov Agam, Harry Bertoia, Jean Arp, Emile Gilioli, Pablo Picasso, Jacques Villon, Andrew Wyeth, Romare Bearden, and Jean Fautrier. The Sunnylands Collection also includes important works of Chinese porcelain, Meissen vases, Chinese cloisonné objects and furniture, Tang Dynasty funerary sculpture, Flora Danica china, Steuben glass, and English silver-gilt objects.
An array of ticketed tours and events are offered, including a walking tour of Frank Sinatra's movie colony neighborhood. For more information, visit Modernism Week.
