A shooting attack Wednesday at the site of Tunisia's largest museum ended with 21 people killed, including 17 tourists. Two of those killed were gunmen after a firefight with security forces.
The dead tourists came from Italy, Poland, Germany and Spain, said officials. Some may have been visiting the National Bardo Museum in Tunis as part of the itinerary on their Mediterranean cruise aboard the Costa Fascinosa, reports the AP. Several people were also wounded.
Known for its collection of Roman mosaics, the Bardo is housed in a former palace. It includes 8,000 objects, mostly antiquities.
The attack was the first on a Tunisian tourist site in years. "It is not by chance that today's terrorism affects a country that represents hope for the Arab world. The hope for peace, the hope for stability, the hope for democracy. This hope must live," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in a statement after the shooting.
