Miami City Ballet (MCB) is closing out its season with a world-premiere by choreography’s current wunderkind, Justin Peck, who collaborated on set deisgns with iconic street artist Shepard Fairey, well-known for his 2008 Barack Obama "Hope" poster.

Part of Points of Departure, the closing program for the MCB, debuted on March 27 with Peck's new work titled Heatscape. It features 17 dancers, is 35-minutes long, and is set to the cinematic music of Bohuslav Martinů’s imaginative Piano Concerto No. 1. The work is inspired heavily by the vibrant streets of Miami.

When Peck was at MCB last season for his critically-acclaimed work Chutes and Ladders, Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez suggested that he visit Wynwood Walls for something cool to see in the city. He did and was so intrigued by what he saw that he contacted Fairey, who created the murals in the Wynwood Arts District.

“He works with these mandala images that start from the center and build outward,” Peck told Vogue, “and that way of working interests me choreographically.”

Both artists were excited at the prospect of broadening their creative scope by working together. Peck stated that “dance is a meeting point of different artistic media.”

This is Fairey's first time working in the world of dance. "I'm proud to follow heroes of mine like Robert Rauschenberg who worked with Merce Cunningham,” he said.

On his blog, Fairey wrote," I’m a big fan of putting my work in front of people using unexpected platforms. The cross-pollination that can happen between the ballet and street art audiences is exciting to me."
