Known as a pioneer in performance art, and later sculpture, Chris Burden died in Los Angeles on Sunday at age 69.
In the 1970s, Burden shocked with his groundbreaking performance pieces that had him shot in the arm, crucified, eletrocuted, and secured in a locker for five days.
Later, Burden moved into creating massive sculptural pieces incorporating architectural elements. His 65-foot work "What My Dad Gave Me" was made of toy Erector set parts and installed at Rockefeller Center in 2008. Another popular work is his 2008 "Urban Light," a group of about 200 Victorian style lamps at Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Art doesn’t have a purpose. It’s a free spot in society, where you can do anything. - Chris Burden.
