Police are investigating the theft of about $75,000 worth of Grateful Dead memorabilia from a Chicago-area auction house.
Donley's Auction Services hosted the Grateful Dead Family Jubileee Auction, celebrating the band's 50th year, on April 11 and 12. Around April 25 and 26, several items went missing prior to being shipped to their new owners.
The most valuable item was a 1966 original Stanley Mouse/Alton Kelley Family Dog, skeleton with roses poster, that was recently hand-painted by Stanley. “This is not a piece that can be re-sold. It is too well-known,” said owner Randy Donley.
(Mouse and Kelley’s “Skeleton and Roses,” created for the Grateful Dead’s 1966 concert at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco sold at Clars Auction Gallery in San Francisco for $19,000 on April 26.)
Also, missing are a 1986 original Grateful Dead Russelheim, Germany promoter poster; a 1986 original Grateful Dead Statue of Liberty first print tour poster and a 1966 “The Quick and the Dead” serigraph hand signed by artist Wes Wilson. This last item is a limited edition, large format Family Dog (FD-12).
Donley is offering a reward for their return.
